About BMI

How BMI is worked out

BMI is your weight in kilos divided by your height in metres, squared. If you are 178 cm and 82,5 kg, that is 1,78 metres. 1,78 multiplied by 1,78 is 3,1684. 82,5 divided by 3,1684 is 26,0. That is the whole sum, and it is why a calculator can do it in your browser without sending anything anywhere.

The adult BMI bands

These are the international cut-offs used by the World Health Organization for adults over 18. They are the same for men and women.

BMIBand
Below 18,5Underweight
18,5 to 24,9Healthy range
25,0 to 29,9Above the healthy range
30,0 and aboveObesity range

Above 30, the obesity range is sometimes split further at 35,0 and at 40,0. Those splits change what a doctor considers, not what this calculator shows you.

What BMI cannot see

BMI knows two things about you: how tall you are and how much you weigh. It does not know how much of that weight is muscle, where fat sits on your body, what your blood pressure is doing, or how you feel when you climb stairs. Two people with the same BMI can be in very different health. That is not a flaw in the number, it is the limit of a number.

Why we do not show you an ideal weight

Plenty of calculators will hand you a target weight. We will not. A single target ignores your build, your history and your health, and for some people it is actively harmful to look at. What is useful is the direction of travel and a doctor who knows your case.

If your weight is worrying you

A calculator is a poor place to take a worry. If your weight has changed without you trying, if eating has become difficult, or if you have simply been putting this off for years, that is a conversation, not a sum. Your GP is the right first door. Carisma Medical is another one, for adults in Malta, and the first assessment is free.

Common questions

How is BMI worked out?

BMI is your weight in kilos divided by your height in metres, squared. At 178 cm and 82,5 kg, that is 1,78 squared, which is 3,1684, and 82,5 divided by 3,1684, which is 26,0. That is the whole sum, which is why this calculator can do it inside your browser without sending anything anywhere.

What are the adult BMI bands?

Below 18,5 is underweight. 18,5 to 24,9 is the healthy range. 25,0 to 29,9 is above the healthy range. 30,0 and above is the obesity range. These are the international cut-offs the World Health Organization uses for adults over 18, and they are the same for men and women.

Does BMI work if I carry a lot of muscle?

Not well. BMI knows your height and your weight and nothing else, so muscle counts the same as fat. If you train seriously, your BMI will read higher than your body composition warrants. Say so in your assessment and the doctor will take it into account.

Why do you not show me an ideal weight?

Because a single target weight ignores your build, your history and your health, and for some people it is actively harmful to look at. What is useful is the direction of travel and a doctor who knows your case. We would rather give you neither number than give you a wrong one.

Is my height and weight sent anywhere when I use this?

The sum runs in your browser. Nothing you type is transmitted unless you fill in the form and press the button yourself, and that form asks for two separate permissions: one for us to handle your health information, and a second, optional one for us to contact you. You can withdraw either at any time.

Does a BMI in the obesity range mean I can have treatment?

No. A calculator does not decide that and neither does a number. A Malta-registered doctor reads your assessment, your history and how you feel, and decides what is safe and right for you. Sometimes the answer is no, and when it is, you are told why and where to go instead.

Can I use this for a child or a teenager?

No. Adult BMI bands are read against a chart that does not apply under 18, and bodies that are still growing are measured a different way. If a young person's weight is worrying you, please speak to your family doctor. Carisma Medical is for adults over 18, in Malta.

Talk to a doctor, not a calculator

A number cannot see your history, your bloods or what you already take. A Malta-registered doctor can. You answer a few questions, then talk it through in a 20-minute video consultation. If the doctor prescribes, the prescription is emailed to you straight after the call, and you collect at any pharmacy in Malta or Gozo.

Malta only. Adults over 18. Prescriptions only when a doctor says they are appropriate.

BMI is a screening measure, not a diagnosis. It estimates body size from height and weight only. It cannot tell the difference between muscle and fat, and it does not measure where fat is stored or your actual health. Two people with the same BMI can have very different health. A waist measurement and a conversation with a clinician give a fuller picture.

BMI is also not a valid measure in pregnancy, after an amputation, for wheelchair users, or where the body is holding fluid.

This calculator does not decide whether any treatment is available to you. Only a Malta-registered doctor decides that, after reading your assessment.
