Malta's Online Doctor

Insomnia

Insomnia Is Usually A Symptom Of Something Else

You have not slept properly in months, and you have already read everything the internet has to say about it. Twenty minutes with a Malta-registered doctor: what is actually keeping you awake, what needs investigating, and a plan that starts where the guidelines start rather than with whatever is quickest to prescribe.

  • A 20-minute video consultation with a Malta-registered doctor
  • A proper look at what is driving the sleep, not only at the sleep itself
  • Care that starts where the guidelines start, which is not with medication
  • Snoring and exhausted days taken seriously as the pattern that points at sleep apnoea
  • A plan you leave with, whether or not anything is prescribed

What happens today

Four Steps. One Call.

You do not have to prove how bad it has got, and nobody is going to open by telling you to put your phone down.

  1. Pre-assessment, then book your consultation

The pre-assessment asks how long this has been going on, what the nights actually look like, what the days cost you, and what you have already tried. It is free, and you choose the time that suits you. Your doctor reads it before you meet, so the call starts where you are rather than at the beginning.

Pre-assessment free · €59 paid when you book, and that is your consultation

  2. Meet your doctor on video

Twenty minutes with a doctor registered with the Medical Council of Malta, spent on what is driving this. Stress, shift work, alcohol, caffeine, pain, low mood, snoring, and anything you are already taking for something else. Poor sleep is usually a symptom before it is the whole diagnosis, and sometimes the answer is not a prescription. You will hear why.

20 minutes · every patient, no exceptions

  3. Your prescription, in your inbox

For long-term insomnia the guidelines start with cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia rather than with medication, and your doctor will explain what that involves, or point at a sleep study, in writing. If the doctor prescribes, your private digital prescription is emailed to you as soon as the doctor issues it, usually straight after the call. It covers what the doctor has decided is right for you, as a short and specific part of a plan rather than the plan itself.

A plan in writing, either way

  4. Collect at any pharmacy

Take it to any pharmacy in Malta or Gozo. You pay the pharmacy directly, at its own price. We never sell or ship medicine.

Being straight with you

What The Doctor Will Do, And What They Will Not

Plenty of people arrive here hoping for something that will put them out tonight. That is a completely understandable thing to want after months of this, and it is not where good insomnia care starts. Here is the honest picture before you book.

What the consultation can do

  • Work out what is actually keeping you awake, from stress and shift work to alcohol, caffeine, pain, low mood, or something you are already taking for another condition
  • Explain what clinical guidelines put ahead of medication for long-term insomnia, which is cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia, and what it would ask of you
  • Recognise the pattern that points at sleep apnoea, and say so plainly rather than treating around it
  • Look at whether a health problem you already have, or the treatment for it, is what is breaking your nights
  • Prescribe where it is clinically appropriate, as a short and specific part of a plan rather than as the plan itself
  • Say plainly when what you are describing is not insomnia at all, and what it is more likely to be

What it will not do

  • Hand over a prescription because you asked for one. That is not treating insomnia, it is quieting it for a night, and everything that broke your sleep is still there when it stops
  • Confirm sleep apnoea. Snoring, exhausted days and waking unrefreshed are the signs, and only a sleep study can measure what your breathing does while you are asleep. Left alone it is a real risk to your heart and your blood pressure, not just noise at night
  • Deliver the therapy itself. Carisma Medical does not run a cognitive behavioural therapy programme. What the consultation gives you is a doctor working out what is keeping you awake and telling you what the guidelines put first
  • Fix it by tomorrow. Insomnia care changes what surrounds your sleep before it changes the sleep, and your doctor will tell you what to expect and when
  • Replace being examined in person, where your nights are being broken by pain, breathlessness or another condition that needs a clinician in the room
  • Help if you are in crisis. If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, you need to be with someone today rather than waiting for an appointment, and if you are in danger now, call 112
  • Treat anyone under 18, or anyone outside Malta and Gozo

The online pre-assessment is free. You pay €59 when you book, and that is what covers your 20-minute intake consultation with the doctor. The €29 a month starts only after you have been seen. Month to month. Stay as long as it is helping, and cancel the moment it is not. The doctor gives you their time and their answer either way. If the doctor judges treatment appropriate, your prescription covers what they have decided is right for you, and it is in your inbox straight after the call. If the honest answer is that a prescription is not the right first step for you, that is the answer you have paid for, and you will leave with the step that is. When your prescription runs out, ask for a renewal. Your doctor reviews it and, if it is still right for you, the new prescription is emailed to you. WhatsApp support when something changes. If the doctor prescribes, the medicine is a separate purchase. Collect at any pharmacy in Malta or Gozo. You pay the pharmacy directly, at its own price. We never sell or ship medicine.

The difference

Why Patients Across Malta Choose Carisma Medical For Insomnia

  • No waiting room and no counter

Nothing to explain at a reception desk, and nobody who might recognise you on the way in.

  • Your record is not shared by default

Nothing goes to your GP, your employer or your insurer unless you ask us to send it.

  • A real clinic, not an offshore site

Carisma has treated patients in Malta since 1990, and your data stays inside the EU.

  • A plan that starts where the guidelines start

For long-term insomnia the guidelines start with cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia rather than with medication, and your doctor explains what that involves.

Before you book

The Questions People Actually Ask

Will the doctor give me something to help me sleep tonight?

Not on request, and it is worth knowing that before you book. For insomnia that has been going on for months, clinical guidelines put a structured behavioural treatment ahead of medication, so that is where a good consultation starts. Medication has a place in some cases, and where it is clinically appropriate your doctor will prescribe it as a short and specific part of a plan rather than as the plan itself. What you will not be given is a prescription simply because you asked, because that quiets one night and leaves everything that broke your sleep exactly where it was.

Why is a prescription not the first answer for insomnia?

Because it treats the night rather than the reason. For long-term insomnia, major clinical guidelines put cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia ahead of medication, and that is where a good consultation starts. A service that hands a prescription over to everyone who asks is doing the easy thing rather than the useful one. Your doctor will tell you honestly where medication fits in your own case, including when it does.

What is cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia?

It is a structured programme that changes what surrounds your sleep: when you go to bed and get up, what you do when you are lying awake, and the loop of frustration and clock-watching that keeps the body alert at exactly the wrong moment. It is not a chat about how you feel, and it is not a list of tips. It is what major clinical guidelines put first for long-term insomnia, ahead of medication. Carisma Medical does not run a cognitive behavioural therapy programme, so what the consultation gives you is a doctor explaining what it involves and what it would ask of you, alongside the specific things that are keeping you awake.

I have already tried sleep hygiene and it did nothing.

That is not a personal failure. Advice about screens, caffeine and a dark room is general advice, and general advice is a different thing from a structured treatment for insomnia that has been going on for months. If you have already done all of it and you are still awake at 3am, the useful next step is a doctor looking properly at what is driving the nights rather than another article listing the same things back at you.

What will the doctor actually ask about?

What your nights look like, how long it has been going on, and what the days cost you. Then the things that sit behind poor sleep: stress, shift work and irregular hours, alcohol, caffeine, pain, low mood, anxiety, and anything you already take for another condition, because some treatments affect sleep. They will also ask whether you snore and whether you wake unrefreshed, because that points somewhere specific. Sleep is usually a symptom before it is the whole diagnosis, and finding what is driving it is most of the work.

I snore, and I am exhausted all day. Does that matter?

Yes, and it is one of the most important things to mention. Snoring, waking unrefreshed and being tired all day is the pattern that points at sleep apnoea, which is a genuine medical condition rather than a habit, and untreated it carries real consequences for your heart and your blood pressure. It also cannot be confirmed on a video call, because it needs a sleep study to measure what your breathing is doing while you are asleep. Your doctor will tell you plainly when that is what your symptoms point at, rather than treating around it, and treating around it is the thing that does the harm here.

What happens after the appointment?

You leave with a plan in writing, an explanation of why each part of it is there, and a doctor who has told you what to expect and when. If the doctor prescribes, your private digital prescription is emailed to you as soon as the doctor issues it, usually straight after the call. Collect at any pharmacy in Malta or Gozo. You pay the pharmacy directly, at its own price. We never sell or ship medicine. It is not a switch being flicked, because insomnia care works on what surrounds your sleep before it works on the sleep itself. Nobody can promise you a specific night, and this page is not going to pretend otherwise.

Is this one appointment, or ongoing care?

That is up to you, month by month. The online pre-assessment is free. You pay €59 when you book, and that is what covers your 20-minute intake consultation with the doctor. The €29 a month starts only after you have been seen. Here is what the monthly part covers. When your prescription runs out, ask for a renewal. Your doctor reviews it and, if it is still right for you, the new prescription is emailed to you. WhatsApp support when something changes. Month to month. Stay as long as it is helping, and cancel the moment it is not. A consultation is always €59. If you want another one in a later month, that month is €59 instead of €29. If the doctor prescribes, the medicine is a separate purchase. Collect at any pharmacy in Malta or Gozo. You pay the pharmacy directly, at its own price. We never sell or ship medicine.

Will my employer, my insurer or my GP find out?

Nothing is sent to your GP, your employer or your insurer unless you ask us to send it. Your consultation is a private medical record held by Carisma Medical inside the EU, and there is no reception, no counter and nobody in a waiting room. If you would like a summary sent to your own doctor, we will do that, and only then.

When should I not use this service?

If you are acutely unwell now, this is not the route. Carisma Medical is not for emergencies, and if you are unwell now, call 112. If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, please do not wait for an appointment: be with someone today, and call 112 if you are in danger now. We also cannot treat anyone under 18, we work with patients in Malta and Gozo, and if sleep loss has reached the point where driving or working feels unsafe, that needs attention today rather than at your booked time.
