What This Appointment Is And What It Is Not
This is a first conversation with a doctor, and it is not a diagnostic assessment. Knowing the difference before you pay for it is the entire point of this section.
What the consultation can do
- Take the history properly, from childhood to last week, without hurrying you through it
- Ask the questions a short appointment never reaches, and take your answers at face value
- Screen for the things that look like ADHD and are not, including sleep deprivation, anxiety, low mood, thyroid problems and alcohol
- Treat or investigate what is treatable now, where something else is driving how you feel
- Explain what a formal assessment involves and what your options are, so you can decide with the facts in front of you
- Put what was discussed in writing for you, and send a summary to another clinician if you ask us to
What it cannot do
- Diagnose ADHD. That takes a structured specialist assessment, and no twenty-minute video consultation is one, here or anywhere else
- Start treatment on request. Medicine for ADHD is controlled by law, and starting it follows a formal diagnosis and specialist care, never a first conversation
- Continue or re-issue something started elsewhere, including abroad. That stays with the service that began it
- Replace care you are already under. If a specialist is looking after this, they stay in charge of it
- Assess anyone under 18, or take the place of a school or workplace assessment
- Help in a crisis. If you are in danger of harming yourself, or someone with you is, that is 112 today rather than an appointment
The online pre-assessment is free. You pay €59 when you book, and that is what covers your 20-minute intake consultation with the doctor. The €29 a month starts only after you have been seen. Month to month. Stay as long as it is helping, and cancel the moment it is not. The doctor gives you their time and their answer either way. If the doctor judges treatment appropriate, your prescription covers what they have decided is right for you, and it is in your inbox straight after the call. If the honest answer is that this needs a formal assessment before anyone can say, or that something else fits what you are describing better, that is what you will be told, along with what to do about it, and you are not left paying for a plan here while you go and do it. When a prescription the doctor has issued you runs out, ask for a renewal. Your doctor reviews it and the new prescription is emailed to you. The Questions People Ask First
Can a doctor diagnose ADHD in a 20-minute video consultation?
No, and any service that suggests otherwise is worth walking away from. Diagnosing ADHD in an adult is a structured specialist assessment, not a conversation, however good the conversation is. What this appointment does is take your history seriously, look properly at what else could explain what you are describing, and tell you what a formal assessment involves so you can decide what to do with the facts in front of you.
So what am I actually paying for?
Twenty unhurried minutes with a Malta-registered doctor who has read your answers before the call starts. You get the questions a short appointment never reaches, an honest opinion on what is going on, treatment or investigation of anything that is treatable right now, and a clear next step in writing. What you are paying for is the time and the answer, and that answer may be that this needs a formal assessment before anyone can say.
Can I be prescribed something for it at this appointment?
No. Medicine for ADHD is controlled by law, and it is started after a formal diagnosis and under specialist care, never on the strength of a first consultation. Your doctor will say so plainly rather than leave you hoping. What they can do is treat or investigate something else that is contributing now, and set out what the route to an assessment would involve. If the doctor does prescribe for that, the prescription is emailed to you straight after the call, and you collect it at any pharmacy in Malta or Gozo.
I was started on treatment abroad. Can you continue it?
No. Continuing or re-issuing a controlled treatment that another service began is not something this consultation can do, and that stays with the service that started it or with a specialist here. The consultation can still be useful to you: your doctor will look at everything around it, including sleep, mood and general health, and will be honest about what your options are.
I did an online test and it says I probably have it. Does that count?
It counts as a reason to talk to a doctor, and it does not count as a diagnosis. Screening questionnaires are designed to catch as many people as possible rather than to confirm anything. Bring it to the consultation. What your doctor does with it is take the same ground properly, in your own words, and weigh it against everything else that produces the same answers.
What if it turns out to be something else?
That is a good outcome, not a wasted appointment. Sleep deprivation, anxiety, low mood, thyroid problems and regular drinking all produce concentration and memory problems that look identical from the inside, and several of them can be treated or investigated now. If one of those fits what you are describing, your doctor will tell you and you will leave with something to act on.
The doctor thinks it is worth pursuing. What happens then?
Your doctor will explain what a formal assessment involves, go through the options with you and what each one asks of you, and put the agreed next step in writing so you are not relying on memory afterwards. We do not print a single fixed route on this page, because the honest answer depends on your case and on where you choose to be seen, and publishing a route that does not fit you would cost you time and money.
Do I need my school reports, or someone who knew me as a child?
Not to book this consultation, and not having them does not disqualify you from anything. A formal assessment usually draws on what you were like in childhood as well as how things are now, so old reports, or a parent or sibling who remembers, are useful if they exist. Your doctor will tell you what is worth gathering before anything else happens, which is a better use of your effort than collecting paperwork nobody asked for.
Will this reach my GP, my employer or my insurer?
Nothing is sent to your GP, your employer, your insurer or anyone else unless you ask us to send it. Your consultation is a private medical record held by Carisma Medical inside the EU. If you would like a summary sent to another clinician, we will do that, and only then. There is no reception, no counter and nobody in a waiting room.
Am I signing up to something ongoing?
Only if you want to be. You pay €59 for the consultation when you book, and the €29 a month for ongoing care starts only after you have been seen. Month to month. Stay as long as it is helping, and cancel the moment it is not. So if what you leave with is a formal assessment to arrange elsewhere, you are not paying us in the background while you arrange it.
