What Can Be Done On Video, And What Needs A Room
A consultation covers more of this than most people expect, and there is a clear line where it stops. Knowing where that line falls before you book is the point of this section.
What the consultation can do
- Review what you are on now, and whether it still suits your health and your life
- Renew a prescription where that is clinically appropriate, so you are not left without one
- Talk through switching: what to expect, and how to change over without a gap in cover
- Go through a missed dose properly, including what protection you need in the meantime
- Sort a supply out before you travel, so being away does not end the method
- Start a method for the first time, where the checks support it
- Say plainly when something else would suit you better than the thing you came in asking for
What it cannot do
- Fit or remove a coil or an implant. Both are done by hand, in person, and no consultation replaces that appointment
- Skip the checks. Blood pressure, weight, smoking, migraine history and whether the migraines come with aura, clotting history and family history decide what is safe, and some answers mean a different method
- Prescribe without a current blood pressure reading where one is needed. If you do not have one, that reading has to come first
- Examine you, or assess anything that needs a clinician in the room
- Help in a hurry after unprotected sex. That is a more urgent question than an appointment can answer, and a pharmacy in Malta can help you the same day
- Protect you against sexually transmitted infections. No method of contraception does that, and only barrier protection reduces the risk
- Treat anyone under 18
- Replace urgent care. Chest pain, breathlessness, a swollen or painful leg, a sudden severe headache or a change in your vision need to be seen today, and 112 if you are unwell now

The Questions People Actually Have
Can a doctor prescribe contraception over video?
Yes, where the checks support it. A Malta-registered doctor goes through your history with you on a 20-minute video consultation, and if the doctor prescribes, your private digital prescription is emailed to you as soon as the doctor issues it, usually straight after the call, and you collect it at any pharmacy in Malta or Gozo. What cannot be done over video is anything that needs hands, so a coil or an implant still has to be fitted in person. Nothing is sent to your GP, your insurer or anyone else unless you ask us to send it.
I have been on the same thing since I was nineteen and nothing has gone wrong. Why review it?
Because the things that decide whether a method is safe for you are the things that change. Blood pressure, weight, whether you smoke, the headaches you get and what has since appeared in your family history all move over the years, and the sensible choice then is not automatically the right one now. It may turn out that nothing needs to change. The point of the consultation is that somebody actually looks, rather than renewing on the assumption that nothing has moved.
What will the doctor check, and what if one of the answers is a problem?
Your blood pressure, your weight, whether you smoke, your migraine history and in particular whether the migraines come with aura, any history of clots, and what runs in your family. Those are not box-ticking, they are what decides what is safe to prescribe. If one of them rules out the thing you came in asking for, the doctor will explain what fits instead, or that a reading or an in-person appointment is needed first. That is a better outcome than a prescription that should not have been written.
I want to switch to something else. Can we sort that on the call?
Yes, and it is one of the better reasons to book. Bring what has actually been wrong with what you are on, because "it is fine" and "I have been putting up with it" are different answers and only one of them leads anywhere. Your doctor will go through the options your history allows, what the first weeks usually feel like, and how to change over without leaving yourself uncovered in between.
What do I do if I miss a dose?
It depends on which method you are on and on when the dose was missed, so there is no single answer that is safe to print on a web page. The instructions issued with your prescription cover the common cases, and your doctor will tell you exactly what applies to you, including whether you need additional protection for a while and for how long. If unprotected sex happened around the missed dose, do not wait for an appointment to ask about it. Urgent options are time-sensitive and a pharmacy in Malta can help you the same day.
My prescription runs out while I am away. Can you help before I travel?
That is exactly what this consultation is useful for, and it is far easier to sort before you go than from a hotel. Book while you are still here and tell the doctor when you are travelling and for how long. How much can be prescribed at once is a clinical judgement they make with you rather than a fixed rule. Your prescription is a Maltese private one, emailed to you straight after the call, so you collect it at any pharmacy in Malta or Gozo before you leave.
Can I get a coil or an implant through an online consultation?
No. Both are fitted and removed by hand, in a room, by a clinician, and no video consultation replaces that appointment. What the doctor can do is talk through whether one of them would suit you better than what you are on, and what the fitting involves, so that you already know what you are choosing and why before you arrange one.
Does this protect me against sexually transmitted infections?
No. No method of contraception protects you against sexually transmitted infections, and only barrier protection reduces that risk. They are two separate questions that need two separate decisions, and it is worth being clear with yourself about which one you are solving. If the second one is also on your mind, say so on the call, because your doctor can tell you what is worth testing for and when.
